This week our pop-up newsroom is going interisland with an event in Hilo.

We’ve been hearing from people in Nanakuli on the west side of Oahu and in Kahuku on the Windward Coast about the issues that are important to their community as well as stories they think Civil Beat could be covering. It’s been interesting — and given us a lots of story ideas — and we hope we’ll get a good turnout in Hilo, too.

We’re also interested in hearing what you love about Hilo. We’re putting together a video from each site we visit and will have a gallery of positive vibes as this project progresses.

The pop-up on Thursday runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hilo Public Library, 300 Waianuenue Ave. in Hilo.

The Civil Beat staff includes Kevin Dayton, our chief legislative and state government reporter, and Paula Dobbyn, our Big Island reporter who covers a variety of topics including local government, the environment, energy and just about anything else that comes her way. Engagement manager and digital producer Ku’u Kauanoe and Eduardo Hernandez from our operations team will also be on hand. Nathan Eagle, who is the editor overseeing the neighbor islands, will be joining us. And I’m coming, too.

These pop-up newsrooms are in partnership with the Hawaii State Public Library System. Since we hit the road last month we’ve had requests from folks all over the state to come to their communities, too. So we are setting up new sites all the time.
