Civil Cafe: Legislative Preview
Civil Beat invites you back to the Hawaii State Capitol for a discussion with leaders of the House and Senate on Wednesday, January 22 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. This is a free community event that will be recorded and sent to all those who have registered.
House Speaker Nadine K. Nakamura (D) and Senate President Ron Kouchi (D) will join Civil Beat Politics Editor Chad Blair and Reporter Blaze Lovell to discuss their priorities for the 2025 session.

Papah腻naumoku腻kea: A Talk Story Event
Join us for a deep dive into the “Guardians of the Deep” series, where Civil Beat Deputy Editor, Nathan Eagle sits down with Randy Kosaki, NOAA鈥檚 Deputy Superintendent of the Papah腻naumoku腻kea Marine National Monument to discuss the findings of their recent voyage there and how it might have long lasting impacts to the neighboring 贬补飞补颈驶颈an islands. The event will take place on Friday, January 24 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Civil Beat headquarters.

Conversation and Coffee: 2024 Election Wrap-Up
You’re invited to meet with Civil Beat reporters and staff to learn more about our nonprofit newsroom and talk about this year’s election results. The event will take place on Wednesday, November 13 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Civil Beat headquarters. The conversation will not be recorded due to the casual nature of the event.

The Future of Agriculture in Hawai’i in the Era of Climate Change
In our next Future of Food event Civil Beat reporter, Thomas Heaton will have a sit-down with University of Hawaii’s Professor Susan E. Crow and banana grower, Gabe Sachter-Smith to discuss the future of agriculture in Hawai’i in the Era of Climate Change. The panel will explore how climate change impacts Hawaii’s agriculture and how both researchers and producers are attempting to address these challenges. The discussion will cover topics such as 鈥渃limate-smart鈥 and organic farming practices, cropping system diversity and climate change adaptation, carbon sequestration and its role in soil quality, farming system resilience, and the potential markets for such commodities.
The event will take place on Friday, October 25 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Civil Beat headquarters in Kaimuki.

The event will will take place on Thursday, October 17, 2024 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Dillingham Theater at Punahou School. The event will be hosted by Civil Beat Vice President of Operations and Philanthropy, Ben Nishimoto. Register to attend in-person or receive the recording.
