Thousands gathered Thursday at Hanakaoo Beach Park in remembrance of the Aug. 8 fires to honor the lives lost in Lahaina.
Hokule‘a and Mo‘okiha O Pi‘ilani, Maui’s voyaging canoe, were on hand for the occasion. A third sailing canoe, Mo‘olelo, burned in the fire.
Families gathered on the beach for live music and activities celebrating Lahaina. Volunteers offered a listening ear for attendees who wanted to talk. Guests brought fresh fruit and cheered as the event was underway.
The paddle out was one of several events planned by Maui County around the one-year anniversary of the fire.
