For the latest version of 鈥淭he Cut,鈥 Civil Beat鈥檚 chief photographer, PF Bentley hit the road. The Cut begins beneath the Koolau mountains on the way to the State Hospital in Kaneohe. There he photographed that trouble-plagued institution for our Broken Promises story.

After preparing pictures of senatorial candidates Brian Schatz and Colleen Hanabusa from their editorial board meetings in Civil Beat鈥檚 offices for our 鈥No Love鈥 story, PF took his camera bag to the Legislature for a Senate investigative committee hearing on dysfunction at the Hawaii State Hospital.

The hearing was led by Clayton Hee, but the powerful senator wasn鈥檛 the only one there who made this week鈥檚 cut. PF snapped others at the hearing, including Department of Health Director Linda Rosen, Deputy Director of the Behavioral Health Division Lynn Fallin and the adult mental health administrator for the Hawaii Department of Health, Mark Fridovich. Sen. Josh Green and Sen. Rosalyn Baker were also present.

Then, PF took the surprisingly bumpy road down Waialae Avenue back to the office.

For the latest version of 鈥淭he Cut,鈥 Civil Beat’s chief photographer, PF Bentley, captured plenty of evocative moments. He visited hearings on the minimum wage and homelessness, took in lei-laden glad-handing by Gov. Neil Abercrombie and Sen. David Ige on the gubernatorial campaign trail and Civil Beat’s editorial board meetings with Sen. Brian Schatz and Rep. Colleen Hanabusa. PF also went to Hanauma Bay before dawn to record the sunrise to go with our reporting on conditions in the area.

Here are some of the people who made The Cut:

State Sen. Clayton Hee, Chairman of the Judiciary and Labor Committee, oversaw a hearing related to homeless issues that is one of several that raise troubling questions. Activists Michael Tada and Michael Daly were among the passionate testifiers. Larry Geller, the president of the Kokua Council, even held up his cell phone screen to show Honolulu bathroom locations to highlight the challenges for homeless people when they need to relieve themselves. Laulani Teale, a coordinator of the Hoopae Pono Peace Project, also spoke.

At the Committee on Labor and Public Employment, State Rep. Mark Nakashima, the committee chair, watched as people spoke during a minimum wage hearing. Bart Dame of the Progressive Democrats of Hawaii and Jenny Lee, a staff lawyer with the Hawaii Appleseed Center for Law and Economic Justice, also had their say.

Bentley also captured some prominent faces: Gov. Neil Abercrombie, Sens. Donna Mercado Kim, Clayton Hee and Laura Thielen, Reps. Faye Hanohano and Mark Takai, state budget chief Kalbert Young, well-known attorney Brook Hart and Judge Mike Wilson, who was confirmed to Hawaii鈥檚 Supreme Court on Monday after an intense legislative process.
