New video of the leak reveals new details about what happened as a water contamination crisis unfolded. 

Ernie Lau called the Navy’s target date of Dec. 31, 2024, to begin defueling its underground storage facility “unacceptable.”

The commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet said Oahu residents were right to believe Red Hill was unsafe.

Residents are concerned that Red Hill isn’t being drained of fuel quickly enough, but Honolulu’s chief water engineer cautioned it needs to be done safely.

If approved by the full U.S. House, the money will go towards facility defueling and water treatment.

The Navy said it turned off the automatic deployment of firefighting foam after a leak in the system.

Repairs are supposed to be completed before the safe removal of fuel from Red Hill can begin.

The Red Hill water contamination crisis has prompted outrage, even among those who have traditionally supported the military.

Meanwhile, new contamination maps released by the health department raise new and troubling questions.

U.S. Navy fuel operations in and around Pearl Harbor were found out of compliance with environmental protection rules in 2019.
