The violation notice comes as the Navy awaits a DOH decision on its permit application.

In May, a Navy pipeline at the Red Hill facility spilled 1,618 gallons of jet fuel, 38 gallons of which were not captured.

Sen. Mazie Hirono, for instance, supports an independent investigation into the Navy’s response to a Pearl Harbor fuel leak, but says the fuel facility should stay put. 

A deputy attorney general also asked that the contested case hearing over the permit for the troubled fuel facility be reopened in light of the new allegations.

The Navy is facing calls for an investigation as its permit hangs in the balance. 

The initiative is set to begin in 2022 after a series of military investigations and legislation calling for sweeping reforms.

The Navy hires biologists and oceanographers to assess and document its environmental impact, but many of those impacts remain unknown.

As the health department held hearings on whether the Navy could operate its Red Hill fuel facility safely, fuel from a Red Hill pipeline was leaking into Pearl Harbor.
