Violent crime is down but property crime is climbing, new FBI data shows.

The Honolulu Police Commission recently released minutes from secret meetings where commissioners and city attorneys hashed out a lucrative retirement deal for the former police chief.

Louis Kealoha, the former Honolulu police chief, and Katherine Kealoha, a former deputy city prosecutor, are now scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 31.

Former HPD sergeant Albert Lee was fired after he was charged for driving under the influence and lying to investigators.

Two people who were among the injured say an officer violated HPD policy. They are also suing the alleged drunken driver.

He said he wants to know how the misdeeds detailed in a federal corruption case were allowed to go “unchecked.”

UPDATED:  Maui prosecutors will consider whether a corrections officer who shot an escaping inmate should face criminal charges, and the state AG is reviewing another shooting by a deputy sheriff.

The Honolulu Police Commission gave the former chief a retirement payment of $250,000 after he was named as the target of a federal criminal investigation. 

The court ruled in favor of the Civil Beat Law Center on a case involving the Honolulu Police Commission’s actions.

Louis and Katherine Kealoha are on trial with three Honolulu police officers for allegedly framing a family member for the theft of their mailbox.
