A Honolulu police officer killed the man after he had shot and injured three people in a house, HPD Chief Joe Logan said.

The man, who was fatally shot by officers early Friday, was a suspect in three bank robberies across Oahu.

Judges in the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rule three Honolulu police officers who arrested an elementary school student in 2020 are not entitled to qualified immunity on an excessive force claim.

Instead, the union calls for a focus on retaining current officers. HPD has started offering a $25,000 signing bonus but says it is also taking steps to keep employees on board.

Justin Castro said he was discriminated against because of his gender. The amount of the settlement, which is pending approval by the City Council, has not been disclosed.

HPD Detective Maile Rego sued in 2021, claiming she suffered retaliation after accusing the department of failing to issue a timely Amber Alert.

Prosecutors say Mason Jordan, while serving as a Honolulu police officer, impersonated young people on social media to lure children to work as prostitutes.

The Honolulu City Council unanimously approved the settlement for Jonaven Perkins-Sinapati, who says HPD officers ran his car off the road in 2021, injuring him and five passengers.

The officers are on restricted duty but have not been charged, police said. Medical records say police pulled him off a motorcycle or bike.

The officers, who were fired this month by the Honolulu Police Department, are also facing criminal charges.
