The former Honolulu City Council member is raising money for the Hawaii Kai to Diamond Head state senate seat held by the Republican lawmaker.

Under a Senate bill, the new approach would be phased in starting with Kauai. It would go statewide by 2022.

The primary election is not until August, but it’s never too soon to gear up to favor candidates with money and advocacy.

Sens. Laura Thielen and Russell Ruderman say it’s time to get the public involved in the conversation even if it doesn’t pass.

The Democratic National Committee chair will headline a campaign event Tuesday night in Honolulu.

About 57 percent of Hawaii voters view President Obama positively. But far less feel that way about Hawaii’s governor and Honolulu’s mayor.

But Hawaii voters also say they believe most misconduct is due to a few bad cops.
