The former U.S. diplomat says he wants to represent Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District for the long term unlike others who have held the seat.

The former Honolulu mayor said his campaign struggled with funding and momentum.

The county’s voters will elect a mayor in November following the nonpartisan August primary.

Kai Kahele’s apparent desire to leave his seat to run for governor is just the latest example of a political revolving door.

Tokuda had been planning a run for lieutenant governor but may drop out to focus on Kai Kahele’s 2nd Congressional District Seat.

Waters said Hawaii should have a representative who will not use Congress as “a stepping stone to other political offices.”

UPDATED. Contributions to Kahele fell off in the first quarter of 2022 while Case saw more donations to his campaign and Schatz continued to bring in significant sums.

He has pulled papers for the 2nd Congressional District seat in case it becomes open.

Just before Kahele took office, the airline and national pilots union agreed to a new provision in the union contract granting a special leave for pilots who are also elected officials.
