Experts are urging people to get the new shot to help stave off an anticipated Covid surge in the fall and winter.

After approval from the Food and Drug Administration and recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the bivalent booster is “trickling” into Hawaii.

State Health Director Elizabeth Char said the new booster is expected to be available for people 12 years and older.

The CDC endorsed the two-dose vaccine last month, offering a protein-based alternative to the other three Covid-19 vaccines approved for use in the United States.

The university said officials will revisit the decision in mid-September after consulting with the state Department of Health on Covid guidelines.

The state Department of Education is trying to improve the situation by buying thousands of box fans and air purifiers amid concerns about the spread of Covid-19 as the school year gets underway.

The state failed to protect inmates and thousands were infected, according to the lawsuit.

The two approved oral antiviral treatments for Covid must be taken within five days of the onset of symptoms.

The new guidance will take effect on Aug. 1. The requirement to quarantine for five days after exposure also will be lifted.
