The Wailuku resident and former government official was selected by Hawaii Gov. Josh Green.
The 51-member Hawaii House of Representatives has yet another new member this year, thanks to a series of vacancies.
Tyson Miyake was appointed Friday to replace Troy Hashimoto, who is now a state senator. Both appointments were made by Gov. Josh Green, who received a list of applicants from Maui Democrats.
Miyake served as chief of staff for previous Maui Mayor Mike Victorino from February 2020 to January 2023. It followed his service as deputy county managing director from 2019 to 2020.
鈥淚 promise to work hard on the important issues for our state, like affordable housing, quality education, and economic development,鈥 said Miyake, whose District 10 seat encompasses the areas of Waiehu, Paukukalo, Wailuku, Wailuku Heights and Waikapu.
Hashimoto replaced Gil Keith-Agaran, who stepped down earlier this year from the District 5 Senate seat (Wailuku, Kahului, Waihee, Waikapu Mauka and Waiehu) to focus on his law practice and the Maui wildfire lawsuits.
Miyake, 41, previously served as COO of the family-owned Miyake Concrete Accessories Inc. He is a director on the American Cancer Society Hawaii Pacific board and a mentor to the Maui High School Academy of Hospitality and Tourism, and he previously served on the executive board of the Boy Scouts of America.
At a press conference Friday, Green said he selected Miyake because of his contacts in government and his background in construction. He added that it was important to fill both seats quickly at a time when Maui issues will be at the forefront of the legislative session that begins next month.
Miyake is one of several new House members appointed this year.
鈥淭his year has marked an unprecedented occurrence, with a record number of appointments to the House of Representatives. The House extends a warm welcome to Tyson Miyake and appreciates his commitment to serving his community,鈥 said House Speaker Scott Saiki.
