State Conservation Officers Cite 34 For COVID-19 Order Violations
Those cited entered closed state parks across the islands.
State conservation officers have cited 34 people across the islands for violating the statewide stay-at-home order amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources said that those people entered state parks on Oahu, Kauai and Hawaii islands over the past few weeks.
On Hawaii island, a 28-year-old woman was cited after she was observed loitering at the Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area, the department said. At the Waiakea Public Fishing Area in Hilo, a 31-year-old man was cited for violating the self-quarantine order.
On Kauai, 10 people, eight of whom were local residents, were cited at Kalalau, Polihale, Kokee, Opaekaa Falls and Wailua River state parks, the state agency said.
On Oahu, conservation officers cited 10 people at Sacred Falls State Park, which has been closed to the public since 1999 after a rockfall killed eight hikers and injured dozens.
“Not only were they violating stay-at-home orders and closed-area laws, they were putting their lives and the lives of emergency first-responders at risk,” Enforcement Chief Jason Redulla said in a news release. “The park is closed for good reason.鈥
A dozen others on Oahu were cited at Diamond Head State Monument, the department said.
