Schatz: Make First Democratic Debate About Climate
The U.S. senator and two colleagues have called on NBC and MSNBC to devote “a significant” amount of time to the issue.
U.S. Sens. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) and Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) this week sent a letter to the chairman of NBC News and MSNBC asking the networks to devote “a significant amount of time” to a discussion on climate action at the first Democratic presidential primary debate.
“There are many ways to address the climate crisis, and voters want to know what policies each candidate supports,” the senators wrote, according to a press release. “Voters deserve a vigorous debate with an informed moderator that can press candidates for detailed answers and hold them accountable.”
The letter notes “devastating impacts of climate change” being felt by communities across the country and highlights recent polling “that found strong support” for climate action among Democrats and Republicans.
The first two televised debates are to be held in Miami.
