The donation from billionaire Marc Benioff, who owns a home on the Big Island, is one of the largest private donations in state history, according to a joint news release.

Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff and his wife, Lynne, have donated $150 million to two Hawaii hospitals with the aim of expanding health care access and connecting them to the University of California San Fransisco Medical Center, the hospitals announced Tuesday.

The donation, which is considered one of the largest private gifts in state history, was split between Hilo Medical Center, which received $50 million, and Straub Medical Center in Honolulu, which got $100 million, according to a joint news release. Both hospitals will be renamed to include “Benioff” in their titles.

The donation to Hilo Medical Center matches a separate $50 million appropriated by the state last year for the hospital’s expansion.

Benioff, who is , according to the financial news website The Street, owns a home on the Big Island near Waimea. His San Fransisco-based company Salesforce focuses on customer relationship management software. The Benioffs have also owned Time Magazine since 2018.

The donation will go toward expanding services at both hospitals and strengthening UCSF’s efforts to serve Hawaii patients in need of specialized care, such as oncology and neurology, according to the release.

Improvements at Hilo Medical Center will include an expansion of its physician recruitment program and an upgraded family birthing center and intensive care unit. Straub Medical Center, which houses the state’s only burn unit, will triple in size, according to the release.
