Oahu Jail Guard Charged With Smuggling Drugs Into Jail
The charges were announced Thursday, a day after the corrections officer was searched at the Oahu Community Correctional Center.
A correctional officer at the Oahu jail is facing federal criminal charges after he allegedly smuggled methamphetamine and other contraband into the facility.
Jon Estabilio Jr., 45, was charged with possession of a controlled substance with the intent to distribute, providing or possessing contraband in prison, and bribery of public officials, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Hawaii said in a news release.
Estabilio was searched after officials at the Oahu Community Correctional Center received information that he was smuggling contraband in, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said. Cigarettes, lighters, tattoo kits and 16 plastic bags containing methamphetamine were found on him.
“We must always hold our law enforcement and corrections officers to the highest standards of accountability and integrity,” FBI Special Agent in Charge Eli S. Miranda said in a press release.
The Hawaii Department of Public Safety said Estabilio has worked for the department, where he is currently employed, since January 2015.
The department declined to comment on the investigation, saying it is ongoing and that individuals are presumed innocent until adjudicated otherwise.
“We can tell you the Department works hard to monitor and eliminate contraband pathways,” public safety spokeswoman Toni Schwartz said in an email statement. “PSD has been, and always will be, committed to tackling the contraband issue through every law enforcement and judicial means possible.”
