Navy Plane Lands In Kaneohe Bay After Overshooting Runway
The nine people on board made it safely to shore.
A Navy plane overshot the runway Monday while landing at the Marine Corps Air Station in Kaneohe and ended up in the bay, according to a spokeswoman.
All nine people on board were uninjured, 1st Lt. Hailey Harms of Marine Corps Base Hawaii said.
The incident happened just before 2 p.m. as the plane was landing after a routine training exercise for maritime patrol and reconnaissance, Harms said.
The nine Navy personnel on board, who are part of patrol squadron four, left the plane through its emergency exits and were met on the water by members of the Marine Corps’ Installation Emergency Medical Services. They were brought back to shore on a raft and evaluated by medical personnel, Harms said.
The aircraft is a Boeing P-8 Poseidon, a patrol and reconnaissance aircraft.
The planes can be used for “ warfare, anti-surface warfare, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance,” according to the Naval Air Systems Command website. The aircraft hold a crew of nine and can be armed with torpedoes and cruise missiles.
The plane was partially submerged in shallow water as of 5:30 p.m. Harms said she could not say if any fuel had leaked into the bay or what specific damages may have occurred.
Military officials are investigating how it overshot the runway, she said.
