Mazie Hirono Gets A Book Deal To Tell Her Life Story
The U.S. senator from Hawaii will detail her upbringing as an immigrant, her recent bout with kidney cancer and her political life in the Trump era.
WASHINGTON — Hawaii Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, who’s running for the Democratic nomination for president, isn’t the only island politician with a book deal.
On Tuesday, Viking announced that U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono will publish her own memoir, yet to be titled, sometime in 2021. She is the first Asian American woman elected to the Senate and is currently the only immigrant serving in the chamber.
Gabbard’s book, titled “Is Today the Day?” is also slated for publication in 2021, but has been delayed a number of times.
Hirono has a long history in politics, first as a member of the Hawaii House of Representatives, then as the state’s lieutenant governor. In 2006, she was elected to the U.S. House where she represented Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District, which includes rural Oahu and the neighbor islands. She was elected to the Senate in 2012.
According to a press release from Viking, Hirono’s memoir will follow her journey from Fukushima, Japan, where she was raised by a single mother, to Washington, D.C., where she has become a vocal opponent of President Donald Trump and his administration.
She will recount her involvement in some of the highest profile political battles taking place today, from the separation of children from their families at the U.S.-Mexico border to the Supreme Court confirmation hearing for Brett Kavanaugh.
Hirono will also address her bout with kidney cancer and how it shaped her decision to be more outspoken on the political stage.
