The governor has until Dec. 30 to select someone to serve Senate District 5.
Residents of Wailuku, Kahului, Waihee, Waikapu Mauka and Waiehu on Maui have not had a state senator since Oct. 31, when Gil Keith-Agaran stepped down to focus on his law practice.
On Monday members of the Maui County Committee鈥檚 Senate District 5 selection body sent three names to Gov. Josh Green to fill the puka. They are:
- Troy N. Hashimoto, currently a House representative and a former chair of the Maui County Democratic Party;
- Jason Alexander Economou, a former government affairs director for the Realtors Association of Maui and currently the owner and proprietor of Economou Law & Consulting, which specializes in government relations, mediation and corporate facilitation; and
- Justin V.E. Hughey, an educator and former teachers union official.
“We are proud to send the names of three engaged Democrats for the Governor鈥檚 consideration,” said Donna Domingo, acting chair of the Democratic Party of Hawaii.
The District 5 seat will be the ballot next year instead of 2026 in order to fill the remainder of Keith-Agaran鈥檚 four-year term.
