Lahaina Fire Death Toll Rises To 99
All but two of the victims have been identified by their remains.
A new tally puts the number of people who perished in the Aug. 8 wildfires on Maui at 99.
The additional death is attributed to the discovery of human remains last Thursday in the Old Lahaina Courthouse, according to Mahina Martin, a spokesperson for Maui County. At the time, police had said it was not yet clear if they were from a new victim or additional remains from a person already identified.
All but two of the fire victims have been identified, according to county officials. Medical examiners have not yet been able to match bone fragments to a name for two other individuals.
Most of the people who died in the fire were Lahaina residents. They range in age from 7 to 97 years old.
