Kauai County will resume normal operating hours on Monday following a temporary move to a four-day work week designed to combat the spread of coronavirus.

The county gave Fridays off to about 400 employees starting in May while extending their work days from eight to 10 hours. The change, which did not affect wages, reduced employee commute times by 20%. The idea was to cut the number of times county employees leave their homes.

Kauai Mayor Derek Kawakami said when he implemented the change that he hoped to revert back to a regular schedule either when the threat of the virus subsides or when schools resume, whichever comes first.
