Kauai County on Monday announced the $5.3 million purchase of 417 acres in Waimea from the Kikiaola Land Co.
Kauai Mayor Derek Kawakami said in a prepared statement that the agricultural land could be used for future recreation, housing or economic uses.
The farm land was formerly some of the most productive sugar cane land in Hawaii, according to George Christensen, board chairman of the Kikiaola Land Co. In more recent decades the land stood fallow.
Christensen said in a statement that the board is looking froward to seeing the land become productive again in a new way for the benefit of the west Kauai community.
