Honolulu Lifeguard Dies After Apparent Shark Bite
The mayor offered his condolences and support during this time of mourning.
Honolulu Ocean Safety lifeguard Tamayo Perry died Sunday after an apparent shark attack on the North Shore, according to a statement from Mayor Rick Blangiardi mourning the loss.
鈥淭amayo Perry, an eight-year veteran of Ocean Safety and well-known North Shore waterman, exemplified bravery, commitment and a deep sense of duty, serving our community with unwavering dedication,” Blangiardi said.
“His heroic actions and tireless efforts to ensure the safety of our residents and visitors will never be forgotten,” he said.
Emergency crews responded to a call just before 1 p.m. at Malaekahana for a 49-year old surfer who was fatally injured after he was bitten by a shark more than once off of Goat Island, according to a news release.
His body was brought to shore by lifeguards via Jet Ski, the release said.
The mayor said the incident was an unfortunate reminder of the inherent risks lifeguards face every day.
鈥淲e ask the community to join us in honoring his memory and to keep his loved ones in your thoughts and prayers,” Blangiardi said, adding that the city would provide “all necessary support during this period of mourning.”
