Heavenly Mound Or Hill Of Destruction? Naming Volcano’s Newest Feature
With its conic shape, Fissure 8 is the most prominent feature of the 2018 eruption in Kilauea’s lower East Rift Zone. Now a small group appointed by state regulators is working to find a name for it.
The most prominent volcanic feature from Kilauea Volcano’s 2018 eruption is Fissure 8.
The eruption site spewed lava several hundred feet into the air at the height of last year’s volcanic activity. It has an iconic conic shape made of hardened lava splatter.
Now appointed by the is mulling over 20 name proposals submitted by members of the public. The group is charged with selecting one of them.
Folks who submitted name proposals generally called on Hawaiian words that reference Fissure 8’s hill-like shape — “puu,” meaning “hill or mound” is common throughout the name proposal entries.
But there’s much diversity in how the name proposals qualify the mound-like formation.
“Heavenly,” or “Destructive”?
“Marvelous,” or “Exploding rage”?
All are in the Hawaiian language.
Fissure 8’s new name is expected to be announced by the end of summer.
