The appointments still need to be confirmed by the Senate.

Former Gov. Neil Abercrombie, Maui attorney Lauren Akitake and Big island business executive Alapaki Nahalea have been appointed by Gov. Josh Green to the University of Hawaii Board of Regents.

Each is filling a county seat on the 11-member board. Their terms begin July 1 and run for five years, subject to confirmation by the Hawaii Senate.

Abercombie was, losing a reelection bid to David Ige. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives off and on for more than 20 years and has also been a state legislator and Honolulu City Council member.

Akitake is a longtime Maui resident who has while also serving as a per diem District Court judge. A press release issued by the governor’s office says she is a graduate of Baldwin High School, Pomona College in California, the University of Kansas School of Law and has a master’s degree from the University of Stirling, Scotland.

Nahalea is the , which manages an historic ahupuaa and modeling how regenerative governance can create a sustainable environment, the press release says. He has held various roles in the community including at Kamehameha Schools where he graduated in 1986 and on various boards and commissions.
