Hawaii Extends Deadline To Apply For Disaster Unemployment Benefits
Maui residents impacted by the wildfires may now file an initial claim through Oct. 26.
The deadline for filing an initial application for Disaster Unemployment Assistance benefits was this coming Monday, Sept. 25.
On Friday, however, the Hawaii State Department of Labor announced the U.S. Department of Labor approved an extension of the DUA deadline through Oct. 26.
鈥淚ndividuals that do not qualify for regular unemployment insurance may be eligible for DUA benefits,鈥 Gov. Josh Green said in a press release. 鈥淚t鈥檚 essential that we make every effort to ensure Maui residents have the resources and time to access these funds.鈥

DUA, according to DLIR, is available for eligible unemployed workers, self-employed individuals, farmers, and fishers “engaged in business at the time of the disaster. Eligibility for DUA benefits will be determined on a week-to-week basis for each week a claim certification is filed.”
Applicants will need to provide proof to document employment or self-employment or to document work “that was to begin on or after the date of the disaster.”
