Hawaii Democrats Gear Up For Presidential Primary
While it’s mostly via mail-in balloting, there will be walk-in sites on the April 4 election day.
The Democratic Party of Hawaii’s party-run presidential primary mail-in voting is underway, according to a press release Friday.
It is the first year that it is being conducted by mail, and the party says it has already mailed out about 57,000 ballots and will be sending out another 15,000 to voters who registered this year before the mail ballot deadline.
For people who did not receive a mail-in ballot, walk-in voting at 21 locations across the state will be available on April 4 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
To vote, individuals must be registered voters in the state, members of the Democratic Party of Hawaii and 18 years of age by general election day on November 3, 2020.
Same-day registration will be available at the walk-in sites.
Because the bulk of the votes are by mail, results are expected to be announced sometime the evening of April 4.
“Moving to a mail-in presidential primary this year turned out to be a prescient decision,” said Kate Stanley, interim chair of the Democratic Party of Hawaii.
Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders and Tulsi Gabbard will be on the ballot, but so will several Democrats who have dropped out.

The Hawaii Republican Party will not be holding a primary election this year.
