Hawaii Could Allow Alternate Sex Designation on Drivers Licenses
The Aloha State could join four others in allowing gender neutral designations if House Bill 1165 becomes law.
Transgender and gender-nonconforming people in Hawaii won’t need to list a specific gender on their drivers license if a bill passed by legislators becomes law.
State lawmakers passed 聽out of a conference committee between the state House and Senate Thursday morning. HB 1165 would allow drivers to list “X” as a sex designation instead of “male” or “female.”
The bill now goes to the floor of both chambers for a final vote. If it clears the floor vote, the bill would move to Gov. David Ige’s desk for approval or veto.
“This is something we certainly had to take care of in the state of Hawaii,” Sen. Lorraine Inouye said shortly after the vote.
Hawaii has the highest rate of people identifying as transgender, according to a 2016 by the University of California, Los Angeles.
