The 39th U.S. president died Sunday in Georgia at the age of 100.
Citing his legacy of service and generosity, top elected officials in ±á²¹·É²¹¾±Ê»¾± on Sunday offered their condolences and warm wishes to the family of former President Jimmy Carter.
Carter, a Democrat who served from 1977 to 1981, died peacefully Sunday in Plains, Georgia., . He had been under hospice care.
“On behalf of the people of Hawai‘i, Jaime and I send our aloha and heartfelt condolences to the Carter ‘ohana during this difficult time,” Gov. Josh Green said in a statement Sunday. “May they find comfort in knowing that his life’s work has left an indelible mark on the world and will continue to inspire generations to come.”
At the direction of President Joe Biden, Green ordered that the U.S. and state flag be flown at half-staff at the ±á²¹·É²¹¾±Ê»¾± State Capitol and all state offices and agencies and ±á²¹·É²¹¾±Ê»¾± National Guard for 30 days starting Sunday.
Other condolences came from ±á²¹·É²¹¾±Ê»¾± delegates in Congress.
“As president, he worked to protect the environment, expand clean energy, champion human rights, and advance Middle East peace,” U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz said in a press release. “After leaving office, he spent decades helping the less fortunate, in America and around the world. His legacy of service, kindness, and generosity will live on.”
Said U.S. Rep. Ed Case, Democrat of ±á²¹·É²¹¾±Ê»¾±: ““Faith, hope, service. These will always define President Jimmy Carter. Faith in God and humanity. Hope for our country and world and for each and all of us. Service as the purpose of life, each in our own best way. His was truly a life of consequence.â€
In Honolulu, Mayor Rick Blangiardi issued the following statement: “Today, we mourn the loss of a remarkable leader … whose life was a testament to compassion, service, and humility. As a president and a humanitarian, he showed us the true meaning of leadership grounded in integrity and a deep care for humanity.”
Blangiardi added, “His commitment to initiatives like Habitat for Humanity and his relentless efforts to eradicate disease and poverty were reflections of a heart driven by empathy and purpose.”
Carter, the 39th president, will be interred in Plains, according to the Carter Center. Public observances in both Georgia and Washington, D.C., in the coming days.
Carter lived in Hawaii during the 1940s while serving in the U.S. Navy, according .
He and his late wife, former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, also visited ‘Iolani Palace in 1984.
