Gary Gill Returns To Politics In Bid For State House
The former Honolulu City Council chair is seeking to fill the seat held by Sylvia Luke.
A well-known figure in local political, government and environmental circles is running for the Hawaii House of Representatives.
Gary Gill, a member of the Honolulu City Council between 1987 and 1994 and chair for those last two years, wants to represent District 25 (Makiki, Punchbowl, Nuuanu, Dowsett Highlands, Pacific Heights and Pauoa).
That’s the seat currently held by Rep. Sylvia Luke, but she is running for lieutenant governor 2022.
Gill’s a number of priorities including “make tourism work for us, the people of Hawaii,” a living wage for working people, universal family leave and affordable health care for all, investment in local agriculture and food sustainability, and expanding Hawaiian Homestead development.
“In Hawaii today and especially on the national level, there is an ever-growing dissatisfaction with government,” he says. “There is plenty to grumble about and people are in the mood to grumble. But who will work to fix what is broken?”
Gill, a longtime active Democrat, previously worked as deputy director for the environment at the state Department of Health and became acting director in 2013 after the death of Loretta Fuddy.
He also worked at the Hawaii Sierra Club, Kokua Kalihi Valley community health clinic, Waimea Valley and Blue Planet Foundation.
Gill is the son of the late Tom Gill, a former lieutenant governor and U.S. congressman.
