Gabbard, Case Vote To Curb Trump’s Ability To Wage War With Iran
Hawaii’s two representatives, both Democrats, were concerned about Trump’s decision to kill a top Iranian official without congressional approval.
WASHINGTON — The U.S. House of Representatives passed a war powers resolution Thursday in an effort to prevent President Donald Trump from carrying out further hostilities against Iran.
Both of Hawaii’s representatives, Tulsi Gabbard and Ed Case, voted in support.
The vote fell almost entirely along party lines at .
It came one day after Trump appeared to de-escalate tensions with Iran after he ordered the killing of Qassem Soleimani, a top military commander whose hands, the president said, were “drenched in both American and Iranian blood.”
Soleimani’s death sparked concern that the U.S. and Iran would go to war. Those worries spiked after Iran responded with a counter-attack that rained ballistic missiles on two Iraqi bases housing U.S. troops.
No one was harmed during the attack, and many considered it a symbolic form of retaliation rather than one meant to incur casualties.
“Congress must act today to stop further escalation of this war,” Gabbard said during brief remarks from the House floor Thursday. “Vote ‘yes’ to stop Trump’s war with Iran.”
