Four Lahaina Schools Closed Monday Due To Red Flag Warning
The schools will close out of an abundance of caution due to a red flag warning and high wind advisory, according to a press release from the Department of Education.
Four Lahaina schools will be closed to students and staff on Monday due to a red flag warning from the National Weather Service and a high wind advisory from the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency, according to a press release from the Department of Education.
A red flag warning indicates an increased risk for fire danger, according to NWS’ website.
The three impacted campuses — Princess Nahienaena Elementary, Lahaina Intermediate and Lahainaluna High School — reopened to students last month after temporarily closing following the Aug. 8 wildfires in Lahaina. Princess Nahienaena Elementary’s campus also serves students from King Kamehameha III Elementary, whose campus was burned beyond repair in August.
NWS’ red flag warning for all islands is set to last until Monday at 6 PM. According to its press release, DOE is monitoring the situation with emergency officials and has emergency preparedness plans in place for its schools.
