Ex-Mililani Athletic Director Gets Probation For Booster Club Theft
Glenn Nitta pleaded no contest to the theft of more than $400,000.
A judge on Tuesday ordered former Mililani High School teacher and athletics director Glenn Nitta to serve four years of probation and pay restitution for the theft of more than $400,000 from the school’s booster club.
Nitta, 76, will serve no prison time, according to a press release from the Honolulu Prosecutor’s Office. Prosecuting Attorney Steve Alm had asked that Nitta receive a sentence of 10 years in prison for the funds he stole from the booster club, which he paid no taxes on.
鈥淢r. Nitta stole from the very children he was supposed to be nurturing in the classroom and on ball fields,” Alm said. “This was a serious crime with hundreds if not thousands of victims.鈥
In June, Nitta pleaded no contest to multiple counts of first and second degree theft and failure to report income. During the sentencing, Nitta’s lawyer provided a $406,000 check to Mililani High School in restitution.
In the press release, Alm called for a stronger punishment for Nitta.
鈥淩estitution is important, but it isn鈥檛 everything,” Alm said. “Paying restitution and avoiding prison is like allowing a bank robber to go free if he gives back the money he stole.”
