Civil Beat’s Pop-Up Newsroom Heads To Kahuku On Tuesday
Our social media experts plan a discussion on how to understand and make social media work for you.
Our next pop-up newsroom will be in Kahuku on Tuesday.
Civil Beat staff will be there from noon to 7 p.m., the library’s regular hours that day.
This is our second visit to the Windward Coast library. Last time, we had the opportunity to talk to a number of residents about a variety of issues, ranging from affordable housing to a local bridge repair to the plans for a new resiliency center. And much more.
They also asked us to come back and help them better understand news and social media, particularly for older community members who don’t quite have the same natural affinity for TikTok and Instagram as the younger generations.
If you’re interested in that particular subject, join us at 5:30 p.m. for the discussion, led by Civil Beat’s social media and engagement manager, Ku’u Kauanoe.
We should have a good crew of editors, reporters and operations staff if you’d like to learn more about Civil Beat’s particular journalistic effort or just share ideas you might have for stories we could write.

I plan to be there too, along with managing editor Kim Gamel and Ben Nishimoto, our vice president for operations and philanthropy.
I have to say we’re really enjoying these pop-up newsrooms. It’s been great meeting so many new people these last few weeks including in Hilo just last week. We’re also starting to put together a video gallery of the places we’ve been that showcases people talking about their hometowns.

We’ll take a short break over the holidays and ramp up again in January. We hope to visit one library a week until we wear out our welcome. Repeat visits are great, there’s plenty to talk about.
