Civil Beat’s pop-up newsroom road trip continues on Sunday with a visit to the Pearl City Public Library.
We’ve been holding talk story sessions at libraries in various communities about once a week in partnership with the Hawaii State Public Library System. The response has been great — lots of people who we normally wouldn’t connect with have come to meet with our reporters about issues and talk with staff about Civil Beat.
These are very informal meet-ups. The library provides the space, usually a back room where we can sit and chat with folks without disturbing regular library patrons. We try to bring enough staff so there can be plenty of individual conversations and allow people to talk about a number of different issues.
With that in mind, the reporters who plan to be there on Sunday include Christina Jedra (who’s been leading our Red Hill coverage and following federal corruption cases); Kirstin Downey (who covers city government and Oahu); Blaze Lovell (state government and Native Hawaiian issues); James Gonser (public safety and crime); Cassie Ordonio (local government, University of Hawaii and Native Hawaiian issues); Ben Angarone (politics and community issues), and Jia Jung (the Philippines and Filipino community). Our engagement manager, Ku’u Kauanoe, and Courtney Teague, who writes our newsletters, will be there to talk about ideas for community engagement. They hope you’ll participate in a quick video interview about how you feel about your comunity. And I’ll be there along with our managing editor, Kim Gamel.
The pop-up Sunday runs during regular library hours, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The library is at 1138 Waimano Home Road.
We are adding new sites as we go along. Please drop a note to news@civilbeat.org if you would like a pop-up in your neighborhood.
