WASHINGTON — Hawaii congressmen Ed Case and Kai Kahele joined 256 of their colleagues Thursday to approve the Respect for Marriage Act, which seeks to enshrine same-sex and interracial marriage into federal law.
Both Case and Kahele’s support was all but certain given that both are Democrats from a deep blue state that already recognizes marriage equality.
They also both of an earlier version of the bill that in July.
The senate passed the Respect for Marriage Act in November with bipartisan support. Both of Hawaii’s Democratic senators, Brian Schatz and Mazie Hirono, were among those voting ‘yes.’
The bill now heads to President Joe Biden’s desk for his signature.
