Biden Picks New Federal Judge For Hawaii
Assistant U.S. Attorney Micah Smith is the president’s nominee, the White House says.
An assistant U.S. attorney has been tapped by President Joe Biden to be the next U.S. District Court judge for Hawaii.
Micah W.J. Smith is deputy chief of the criminal division at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Honolulu and the criminal civil rights coordinator.
Smith has been with the office since 2018.
A graduate of Harvard Law School, Smith was in private practice in Washington, D.C., before going to work for the U.S. Attorney鈥檚 Office for the Southern District of New York from 2012 to 2018. He was a law clerk for Supreme Court Justice David Souter.
Smith’s nomination comes as two District Court judges in Hawaii, J. Michael Seabright and Leslie Kobayashi, are slated to go on senior status in 2024.
His nomination still needs to be approved by the U.S. Senate.
