A Year Later, HPD Still Investigating Shooting Deaths Of 2 Police Officers
HPD has yet to release any of its findings about the day two of its officers were killed.
The Honolulu Police Department says it is still investigating a Jan. 19, 2020 attack in which two HPD officers and a local homeowner were killed and several homes were burned down in the Diamond Head neighborhood.
“The investigation is in its final stages and is expected to be completed next month,” Michelle Yu, a department spokeswoman, said in an email on Tuesday.
Yu did not respond to a request to interview a department official about the investigation. She also did not answer questions about the scope of the investigation or whether the department intends to make the resulting report available to the public.
Officers Tiffany Enriquez and Kaulike Kalama were killed after responding to an assault call on Hibiscus Drive one year ago.
The homeowner, Lois Cain, was seeking to have her tenant Jerry 鈥淛arda鈥 Hanel evicted, according to court records. Police said Hanel attacked Cain and another tenant who attempted to intervene before fatally shooting Enriquez and Kalama and setting a fire that would damage or destroy about a dozen homes.
The remains of Cain and Hanel were found at the scene.
