Fateful Car Wreck Takes Center Stage At Miske Trial As Alleged Murder Victim’s Girlfriend Testifies

Ashley Wong spoke through tears as she described the 2015 crash that severely injured Johnathan Fraser and led to the death of Michael Miske’s son. Miske is accused of conspiring to have Fraser killed months later.
Minutes after Ashley Wong watched her boyfriend, Johnathan Fraser, ride off with his best friend, Caleb Miske, in a black Honda hatchback on Nov. 17, 2015, she heard a heavy crunch and turned to see a large white truck in the intersection where their car had been.
鈥淚t was just 鈥榖oom,鈥 and you could feel metal,鈥 she told jurors Wednesday as she testified in the federal racketeering trial of Caleb’s father, Michael Miske. 鈥淵ou knew it was a car, this wasn鈥檛 just some trees falling down or a pole. This was metal on metal.鈥
The fateful crash has become a central plot point in the case against Miske, who is accused of conspiring to have Fraser kidnapped and killed in 2016. Prosecutors say Miske falsely blamed Fraser for the crash that severely injured his son and led to his death four months later.
But Wednesday was the first time jurors heard Wong鈥檚 version of events.
Muffled cries could be heard throughout the courtroom as she described running to the passenger side of the mangled vehicle to find Fraser choking on blood.
鈥淚 put my mouth on his and sucked the blood out of his mouth,鈥 she said, her voice breaking through tears.
Fraser was last seen alive on July 30, 2016, and his body has never been found. Miske is charged in a 19-count indictment, which includes murder in aid of racketeering and murder-for-hire conspiracy resulting in death, both of which carry mandatory minimum life sentences upon conviction. He has pleaded not guilty to all counts.
Young Love And Friendship
Wong鈥檚 testimony began with the early days of her and Fraser鈥檚 romantic life. She said they knew each other from school but began dating after connecting over their love of pit bulls at a dog handling class.
They became inseparable after their first date 鈥 night surfing in Waikiki, she said.
After they graduated from high school in 2012, Wong introduced Fraser to another acquaintance of hers, Caleb Miske. Caleb also had a pit bull, and both young men were fascinated with cars and racing.
鈥淚mmediately they seemed like they became best friends,鈥 she said.
Soon, Caleb Miske, his girlfriend Delia Fabro, Fraser and Wong began hanging out every weekend. They eventually moved into a townhouse in Waipahu together.
Fabro, who would later become Delia Fabro-Miske, was a co-defendant in Miske’s case but took a plea deal before the trial.
The group of four friends later fell on financial hard times and got evicted from the townhouse, Wong said. More trouble ensued when Fraser was accused of stealing a Rolex watch that belonged to Mike Miske, and two men came to beat him up, she said.
Fraser and Caleb distanced themselves from each other for awhile, she said, but they maintained a connection. Eventually, the two joined a car racing club and started hanging out regularly. Soon, the group of four, including Wong and Fabro, began seeing each other frequently again 鈥 driving around, taking ecstasy and camping on the North Shore on the weekends, she said.
The Crash
On Nov. 17, 2015, Wong said Caleb called Fraser, excited to show him a new Honda hatchback he鈥檇 just bought.
They all met at Windward City Shopping Center, and Wong stayed behind in a parked car as the two men took the Honda out for a spin 鈥 Caleb in the driver鈥檚 seat and Fraser as the passenger, she said.
鈥淭hey had the biggest smiles on their faces,鈥 she said.
About two minutes later, she heard the crash.
She ran to attend to Fraser in the passenger seat and saw Caleb pinned in the driver鈥檚 seat.
鈥淐aleb was in a lot of pain,鈥 she said. 鈥淗e was trying to pull his leg out.鈥
Paramedics got Fraser out first and brought him to the hospital, she said. As she was leaving the scene to follow him, she turned to see firefighters still working to extract Caleb from the driver鈥檚 seat using a Jaws of Life tool.
Later on, as family members of both men started to gather at the hospital, Mike Miske approached Fraser鈥檚 stepmother and told her he may have had proof that Fraser had been driving at the time of the crash, not Caleb, Wong said.
鈥淚t was something shocking to hear that maybe John was the driver, because I was at the accident,鈥 Wong said. 鈥淚 was there, there鈥檚 no way.鈥
Fraser eventually improved enough that he could leave the hospital, but Caleb deteriorated and died in March 2016. Wong and Fraser didn鈥檛 go to his memorial service, though, because their loved ones told them it wasn鈥檛 safe because of the rumor that Fraser had been in the driver鈥檚 seat.
Wong also stopped communicating with Caleb鈥檚 girlfriend, Fabro, who had given birth to a daughter just before Caleb’s death.
鈥淚t was like we were not friends anymore,鈥 she said.
Evolving Relationship With Miske
Eventually though, Wong reached out to Fabro, and the two met up. One of the first things Fabro said when they saw each other was that she heard Fraser had been driving at the time of the crash.
Wong said she tried to shut the rumor down.
鈥淚 was very set on, 鈥業 don鈥檛 know where you鈥檙e hearing this from, but get it out of your head because it鈥檚 not the truth,鈥欌 she said.
The two women started to rekindle their friendship, and Fabro later brought Wong and Fraser to visit the place where Caleb鈥檚 ashes were spread in Hawaii Kai. They also started to speak to Miske again.
In May 2016, Wong and Fraser moved in with Fabro to a two-bedroom condo in Hawaii Kai financed by Miske.
The place was nice, Wong said, but she and Fraser were never given their own key, and their bedroom door didn鈥檛 have a doorknob.
After the move, Miske took Wong and Fraser out for dinner and asked Fraser to help him build a tribute car for his son.
Miske bought a car for Fraser to work on and later offered him a job at Matson shipping company.
鈥淢iske gave you a place to live, he bought Johnathan a car and was now offering a job at Matson?鈥 asked Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Inciong.
Wong said yes 鈥 all within the same month.
She said they became so close with Miske that when she learned she was pregnant weeks later, she told Miske over dinner before telling her own parents.
The trial day ended before prosecutors could address Fraser鈥檚 disappearance in July 2016. Wong is expected to return to the stand on Thursday.
