We Want To Hear From West Maui Residents At Our Next Pop-Up
Civil Beat is hosting a pop-up newsroom in Kaanapali on Thursday.
Two weeks ago our Civil Beat crew met with Maui residents at the Makawao Public Library. The steady flow of people who came to discuss issues and offer us story ideas wanted to talk about the recent fires, of course, but a lot were concerned about the problems Upcountry Maui residents were facing with unsafe water, for instance, or trouble getting help from FEMA.
Now we want to hear from folks in West Maui. We recognize it’s been difficult for a lot of people to leave the area to even seek services or get supplies, let alone come and talk to us.
But we do want to hear your stories, and find out about the very real challenges you’re still facing — lack of housing, for instance, or how well the government has done providing help. We want to hear what’s working as well as what’s not, and what the rest of Hawaii can learn from your experiences.
So on Thursday a few reporters and editors will be at Duke’s Beach House in Kaanapali to meet with residents of the area as well as anyone else who wants to talk with us. The owners of Duke’s are generously providing us some space where we can sit and talk with folks. (They’ve also been offering kamaaina a 20% dining discount with valid ID).
The pop-up runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The address is 130 Kai Malina Parkway.
We hope to see you there. It’s not our last stop on Maui by any means; we have more pop-ups planned on the island over the next couple months. But we think it’s an important one.
