Anyone experiencing an emergency in West Maui was urged to call the Lahaina Police Department at 808-661-4441, as 911 services were not available in the area.

Lahaina did not have landline or cellphone service as of Thursday, but as of Friday, some cell signal was available in West Maui, the county said. People in the area were advised to text message if calls were not going through.

Maui Evacuation Shelters

Emergency shelters have internet connection but do not have items such as bedding and toiletries available for evacuees, according to Maui County. Pet owners must restrain their animals.

The following shelters were open:

• Kahului: King’s Cathedral Church; The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; and Grace Bible Church.
• Kihei: South Maui Gymnasium
• Makawao: Oskie Rice Arena is for farm and ranch animals only.
• Pukalani: Hannibal Tavares Community Center.
• Wailuku: War Memorial Complex.
• Honolulu: Disabled American Veterans (2685 Nimitz Highway location).

Maui Evacuee Shuttles

Anyone staying in shelters at the War Memorial Gymnasium, King’s Cathedral and Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is able to take a free on-demand shuttle for rides to most Central Maui shopping centers and medical facilities from 8 a.m. until the last pickup at 8 p.m.

Maui Evacuation Orders

Visitors with transportation were asked to leave Maui as quickly as possible, the county said Wednesday.

Maui County fire officials recommended residents of the following areas participate in proactive evacuations:

• Kula: Holopuni and Pulehi roads.

Evacuations also occurred in the following areas:

• West side: Lahainaluna Road, Hale Mahaolu, Kelawea Mauka and Lahaina Bypass;
• Upcountry: PiÊ»iholo and Olinda roads, Kulalani Drive and Kulalani Circle subdivision; Kula 200 and Hanamu Road areas.

The state asks people to refrain from entering West Maui unless necessary to live, work or volunteer.
