Fires in Maui spurred multiple evacuations after flames ravaged much of Lahaina town and elsewhere in Kula and Upcountry areas.

Maui County shelters remained open as thousands were displaced in fires that scorched Maui.

The death toll is currently at 97 people.

Gov. Josh Green said the event was “likely the largest natural disaster” in state history. Lt. Gov. Sylvia Luke issued a state early Wednesday.

Kahului Airport remained open and outgoing flights were available, but officials asked visitors to refrain from traveling to areas affected by wildfire.

Anyone experiencing an emergency in West Maui was urged to call the Lahaina Police Department at 808-661-4441, as 911 services were not available in the area.

Lahaina did not have landline or cellphone service as of Thursday, but as of Friday, some cell signal was available in West Maui, the county said. People in the area were advised to text message if calls were not going through.

Maui Fire Containment Latest

Here are Maui County’s most recent containment estimations:

  • Lahaina fire: 89% contained as of Saturday night at 2,170 acres, according to Maui County. No active threats.
  • Olinda fire: 85% contained as of Saturday night at 1,100 acres. No active threats.
  • Kula fire: 80% contained as of Saturday night at 200 acres. No active threats.
  • Pulehu/Kihei fire: 100% contained as of Saturday. Not yet extinguished.

Maui Evacuation Shelters

Emergency shelters have internet connection but do not have items such as bedding and toiletries available for evacuees, according to Maui County. Pet owners must restrain their animals.

The following shelters were open:

  • Kahului: King’s Cathedral Church; The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; and Grace Bible Church.
  • Kihei: South Maui Gymnasium
  • Makawao: Oskie Rice Arena is for farm and ranch animals only.
  • Pukalani: Hannibal Tavares Community Center.
  • Wailuku: War Memorial Complex.
  • Honolulu: Disabled American Veterans (2685 Nimitz Highway location).

Maui Evacuee Shuttles

Anyone staying in shelters at the War Memorial Gymnasium, King’s Cathedral and Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is able to take a free on-demand shuttle for rides to most Central Maui shopping centers and medical facilities from 8 a.m. until the last pickup at 8 p.m.

Passengers can only bring items they can carry. Wheelchairs can be accommodated.

Maui Evacuation Orders

Visitors with transportation were asked to leave Maui as quickly as possible, the county said Wednesday.

Maui County fire officials recommended residents of the following areas participate in proactive evacuations:

  • Kula: Holopuni and Pulehi roads.

Evacuations also occurred in the following areas:

  • West side: Lahainaluna Road, Hale Mahaolu, Kelawea Mauka and Lahaina Bypass;
  • Upcountry: PiÊ»iholo and Olinda roads, Kulalani Drive and Kulalani Circle subdivision; Kula 200 and Hanamu Road areas.

Locating Maui Evacuees

The county has opened a family assistance center for people looking for loved ones who have not been accounted for. Visit the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily at 310 W. Kaahumanu Ave. in Kahului.

Immediate family members of missing people are encouraged to visit the center to take a DNA test to assist in identification, the county said. Make an appointment by calling 808-270-7771 or sending an email to FAC@mauicounty.gov. Family members on a neighbor island may call the Federal Bureau of Investigation Honolulu at 808-566-4300 or email HN-COMMAND-POST@ic.fbi.gov.

Anyone searching for a missing loved one may also call the Red Cross at 800-733-2767. For the Red Cross number, press 4, be prepared to follow prompts for the Maui Wildfires, and be ready to leave contact information for someone to call you back. The FBI is also asking people to file a missing persons report at (808) 566-4300 or HN-COMMAND-POST@ic.fbi.gov.

Honoapiilani Highway at Maalaea — the road into Lahaina — was slated to reopen from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday. Access beyond those hours will be limited to West Maui residents, the county said in a .

The state asks people to refrain from entering West Maui unless necessary to live, work or volunteer.
