I reside in Kaimuki the hotbed of monster homes, most of which have already been built, making enforcement a little too late for many. Interesting point from what I read in the news reporting on these projects is that they are overly represented by a few Asian builders. That would mean anytime you see these same ole general contractors come up for permits, wouldn't that alert DPP to the possibilities the proposal is for a monster home? And from what I see, these homes are not built for vacation rentals, but more as an apartment structure in a residential neighborhood. This substantiates the cartoons capturing over parking on our narrow streets. When you do the math, each tenant has a car, or two with no off street parking. Madness, that is easily recognizable around each structure.

The CandC's inability to reign in monster homes only reflects on their overall poor performance. The monster home isssue has been going on for the better part of 15 years here in Kaimuki and only now is the city council preparing to pass laws that may have some teeth with them. 64 percent raises indeed! They have historically lagged behind issue of the day. Street repairs, timing traffic lights, rail, monster homes and as of late electric bikes/scooters and the proliferation of roosters. The inability to get ahead or even see a potential problem coming is appalling.

Unfortunately, this image does not differentiate between high-density apartment buildings or extended-family homes (both of which would help supply more affordable housing)...and the large Monstah Houses that become illegal rentals or short-term vacation spaces.
