A Maui police officer shot and killed a 29-year-old man Thursday evening after responding to a report of a suicidal male at a home in Kahului around 7 p.m., according to a Maui Police Department release.
The first officer on the scene encountered the Kahului man wielding a weapon over his head, MPD says. He then advanced toward the officer, at which time the officer discharged his weapon, the MPD release says.
Officers performed life-saving measures until medical personnel arrived on the scene. He was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center for further treatment, where he later died, MPD says.
The victim鈥檚 identity is currently being withheld for 24 hours to allow his family an opportunity to notify their extended family and friends, the release says.
The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave as standard procedure.
There were no other injuries reported.聽The investigation is ongoing. 聽No further information is available at this time, the release says.
