Civil Beat Wins Public Service Award In Hawaii Journalism Contest
Civil Beat was also named best online news site for the 10th year in a row by the Hawaii chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
Civil Beat reporter Anita Hofschneider won the year’s top journalism prize from the Society of Professional Journalists’ Hawaii chapter when the awards were announced at an online presentation last week.
“Hawaii’s Pandemic: Hardest Hit Communities” was honored with first place for public service reporting. Hofschneider’s series examined significant racial and ethnic disparities in Hawaii related to the rate of Covid-19 infections as well as how officials were responding to outbreaks in the Pacific Islander and Native Hawaiian communities. The project included a guide to testing and other resources translated into Marshallese, Chuukese, Kosraean and Tagalog.
Hofschneider along with reporters Nick Grube and Yoohyun Jung won first place for investigative reporting for an in-depth look at how the Honolulu Police Department tracks police killings and flaws in the record-keeping.
Civilbeat.org was named the best online news site in Hawaii for the 10th year in a row. Hawaii News Now took second in that category.
The annual contest honors journalists for their work published in daily newspapers, in magazines, on the radio, on television and online. There’s a category for college journalists as well. You can read the on the Hawaii SPJ website.

Civil Beat won numerous awards, including first place for news column writing, government reporting, science reporting, data journalism, editorial writing, news/video photography and photo/video essay.
Shannon Wianecki was named best independent journalist, Katrina Valcourt of Honolulu Magazine won feature column writing, Pacific Business News took first place for breaking news reporting, Catharine Lo Griffin won for health reporting, and Beau Flemister won first place for sports reporting for a piece in Hana Hou magazine. The top award in explanatory reporting went to Noelle Fujii-Oride at Hawaii Business magazine.
Griffin also took home a first place for arts and entertainment writing for a story in Hana Hou and the top award for editorial cartoon or illustration went to Kelsey Ige and Shar Tuiasoa from Hawaii Business. First place for special section went to Pacific Business News.
The top award for feature photography or videography went to Mike Hinchey of Green Island Films while first place for sports photography went to Hayden Ramler of Hana Hou.
