The number of coronavirus cases surpassed 600 for a second day in a row on Friday, with two new deaths reported as the highly contagious delta variant continued its fast spread.

Hawaii reported 628 new cases on Friday, down slightly from the record 655 infections on Thursday, raising the total to 45,245 since the pandemic began. The death toll increased to 524.

The state has trended in triple digits for about three weeks. Oahu reported the highest number of cases Friday at 424, followed by Hawaii island with 110, Maui with 64, Kauai with nine and 21 residents who tested positive while out of state.

The state’s vaccination rate remained steady at 60.6% amid a push to get more shots in arms.

On Thursday,听Gov. David Ige issued a new pandemic emergency proclamation, which requires state and county workers to be vaccinated by mid-August or submit to weekly coronavirus testing.

The statewide test positivity rate is 6.8%, with an average of nearly 447 cases per day over the past week.
