As a chess player, I am acutely aware of the inevitable degradation of one's chess skills in the absence of worthy opponents. The same applies to governance and politics. I never cared much for the GOP but I do mourn the absence of viable opposition to the Business-as-Usual party.

Self-inflicted. They embraced Qanon, conspiracy theories and hate speech. 聽They came to the proverbial fork in the road and "took it" : 聽They embraced Trumpism even after their self-appointed Caesar crossed the Rubicon on January 6, 2021. 聽
