HAWAII VIRUS TRACKER — Feb. 17: 29 New COVID-19 Cases And 1 Death

Low case counts this week are being attributed to a laboratory reporting error.

State health officials reported only 17 cases on Tuesday — the lowest number of daily cases since the end of July — but said later in the day the number was an undercount because of a laboratory reporting error. It was unclear if Wednesday’s cases were also artificially low.

The electronic laboratory reporting system was interrupted sometime after Sunday, officials said, but did not specify for how long or what caused the system error.

The state “anticipates a ‘rebound’ effect of increased case numbers over the next few days as feeds are re-established,” a spokesperson wrote.

The cases reported Wednesday included one on Hawaii island, nine on Maui, 16 on Oahu and three residents diagnosed out of state.

Clinics and pharmacies have given more than 268,428 doses of About has received at least the first of two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Hawaii remains in which includes seniors 75 and older, first responders and other essential workers. The third phase of Hawaii’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout plan is scheduled to launch in March. That phase, 1c, will include people 65 and older along with other essential workers and people with underlying health conditions.

There are currently 38 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Hawaii, including 14 in intensive care and nine people on ventilators. During the last peak of infections in September, as many as 50 people needed ventilators.

Reporting Lag

Civil Beat’s virus tracker is updated when the state releases its daily numbers. The state posts new data daily at noon. Daily reports reflect laboratory results collected up until 11:59 p.m. two days prior, leaving a 36-hour lag between when results are submitted to the Department of Health and when the state reports them publicly.

Statewide, 1% of people tested during the past week . That figure is 2.0% on Maui and 1.2% on Oahu. Hawaii island and Kauai County had fewer than 1% of patients test positive for COVID in the last week.

Current restrictions on gatherings on Oahu will remain in place for at least another month.
