VIRUS TRACKER — Dec. 10: 123 New COVID-19 Cases In Hawaii

Health officials reported 123 on Thursday, including 79 on Oahu, 24 on the Big Island, 11 on Maui and two on Kauai. Seven Hawaii residents were diagnosed with COVID-19 out of state.

Two fatalities were reported on Oahu. The state’s official death toll is 268 and the statewide COVID-19 fatality rate is 1.4%.

Gov. David Ige on Thursday to shut down all bars for two weeks beginning Saturday, Hawaii News Now reported.

During the past two weeks, Maui County’s weekly average case rate outpaced that of the weekly case rates statewide and in Honolulu. Maui County currently has the highest seven-day average daily case rate among all counties, with an average of 7.3 new cases per 100,000 people reported per week.

The daily reports reflect laboratory results collected up until 11:59 p.m. two days prior, which means there is a 36-hour lag between when results are submitted to the Department of Health and when the state reports them publicly.

According to Janice Okubo, spokeswoman for the Hawaii Department of Health, the COVID-19 case reports are based on test results from laboratories statewide and include test results from both residents and tourists tested within the state.

The results of Hawaii residents who test positive out of state also are included, as well as cases confirmed among military service members and their families, although military cases are not specifically indicated.

If a visitor takes a test outside of Hawaii, those test results are reported to their home state health authorities and would not be reflected in the Hawaii health department’s reports. In some cases, rapid point-of-care testing results are not submitted to the DOH and are not included in these daily reports either.

There were 1,175 cases recorded during the last two weeks — a metric that the health department uses as a proxy to estimate how many people currently have active infections.
