Health officials recorded on Tuesday, including 45 on Oahu, seven on Hawaii island, one on Kauai, four on Maui, and four more Hawaii residents were diagnosed outside of the state.

Kawakami urged people to avoid gatherings during the upcoming holiday season.

“We’re facing alarming COVID numbers on our island — 18 new cases in the past four days. That’s the highest rate that we’ve seen all year,” he said. “This is not just a tourist problem. Nearly half of our recent cases are among residents.”

The death on Kauai is not yet reflected in the state Department of Health’s official COVID-19 death toll. Civil Beat calculates at least 251 people have died from the disease in Hawaii including the Kauai death and 17 deaths on Hawaii island that are pending medical verification by the state. To date, 49 deaths on the Big Island have been recorded by the .

The Department of Health’s statewide is 233.

Statewide, there have been 1,313 new cases in the past two weeks. The statewide has hovered around 2% for the past week.

The COVID-19 case reports are based on test results from laboratories statewide. The numbers include lab results from both residents and tourists. Since March, 94% of cases diagnosed in the islands have been among residents and 7% have required hospitalization.
