Health officials recorded 163 new COVID-19 cases statewide on Saturday, including 123 on Oahu, 15 on Hawaii island, 12 on Maui and four on Kauai. Nine other Hawaii residents were diagnosed out-of-state, according to the .

There were seven additional deaths reported, all on Oahu. There have been 1,340 new cases in the past two weeks.

Of the 123 new cases on Oahu, 50 involved a cluster at the Waiawa Correctional Facility, according to a health department statement.

Reporting Lag

The COVID-19 case reports are based on test results from laboratories statewide. The numbers include lab results from both residents and tourists. Since March, 94% of cases diagnosed in the islands have been among residents and 7% have required hospitalization.

There were 1,301 new cases reported statewide in the last two weeks. Health officials use the number of cases reported in the past 14 days as a rough approximation of the number of active cases, or people who could still be infectious.

Civil Beat calculates at least 248 people have died from the disease in Hawaii including 17 deaths on Hawaii island that have not been recorded yet by the Department of Health due to medical verification lags.

The statewide official death toll is 231. County officials are usually the first to announce local cases and fatalities.
